New Crias and Updates

Yesterday Azzura gave birth to a very striking male cria.  He is a big solid lad and so we are going to name him after our grandson, Rhys, who is also a big solid lad!!  This is a second son for Dad Carter.

Jade is just over 3 weeks old, and you can see that while only being hours old Rhys is bigger than her!!

Today Maggie gave birth to a black male cria, we've called him Magellan.  She needed quite a bit of help to deliver him, and was a little uncertain what to do about him at first, but is bonding with him now, and I think they will be fine :)

Yesterday Jade was looking a bit off, sleeping a lot, but still feeding.... today she is worse and the vets think she has a viral brain infection, her sight is affected and she is very lethargic.... except when I try to bottle feed her, then she has all the strength in the world to resist my efforts.  Think good thoughts for our little girl as she battles this latest obstacle, the odds are not attractive!

These are my good samaritan down the road neighbours, Gayle and Laurie Gardiner.  They have been rendering their time and energy to get Trinket injected with antibiotics to combat the infection in her c-section wound.  Today she has to have 2 injections and a third on Wednesday.  I am very grateful to Gayle and Laurie for all their time and help :)  It would have been impossible without them.  Gayle is a nurse, and so all I have to do is 'hold' and she does the tricky bit :)  She and Laurie also volunteer their time to rescue, care for and release injured wildlife and are currently caring for a baby galah.

New Arrivals and Home Paddock Update

On Monday we got 9mm of very welcome rain.  Namoi gave birth to a male cria while it was coming down, wouldn't have been too bad, except that she delivered him into a puddle!!  Towelled him dry and luckily the sun came out.

He's had a chance to dry off properly now :)

This is Collette's daughter, Chianti - looking good :)

Cushla and her daughter, Scarlett - born the same day, what else could I name her???

Little Farquhar, a very pretty little cria :)  And pretty sneaky too, watched him steal a feed from Orchid while she was too busy eating brekky to notice!!

Lucien, already a very large llama in his head!!

Jade continues to do well, now looking like a 'proper' llama cria and being taken very good care of by her mother Trinket.

Trinket and Jade, New Gates

When Jade was born, her ears hung off the side of her head like a little goat kid's ears.  I didn't believe they would straighten up by themselves and thought they'd need taping... but here we are at day 10 and they're up!!  She's also up on her feet now, no more low pasterns :)

Visually, you may not find these next pics very interesting, but  2 new gates that will soon be joined by a fence, including a creek crossing, are fantastic news to me!!  It will mean we have divided the Long Paddock and that Morse can move out of the driveway and have more room, and more feed, all good :)

Scarlett-Rose, Trinket and Her Cria and the Rest of the Gang

Sunday was a big day, I got to visit Freya and hold little Scarlett-Rose for the first time.  Lots of goo-ing and gaa-ing, and grandmother style gushing, she is very sweet - of course!!

Then I attended a Llama Assoc. meeting at Alpaca Magic, where there were new crias to meet.  This one needed a supplementary feed, and being held by Tanya looked like a giant of a cria even though she's only a day or so old!!

But it turns out she's just a normal size cria, and Tanya is the little one!!  LOL!!

While I was away Fresian gave birth to Alpha Centauri Alba's first son, we've called him Farquhar.  Here being introduced - across the fence - to Dad.

With mum, Fresian:

And he is as cute as a button!

Yesterday Trinket's cria was a week old, its been a big week, her ears are coming up, yesterday they were at 45 degrees, today they are parallel to the ground and she's coming up onto her feet as well, still a bit to go, but getting there.  Also her teeth have come through.  Two important things happened yesterday, she gets a name - Jade Tigress (was going to be Princess, but changed it because of her brindled colouring) and I handed over all her feeds to her mother - that's a double YAYYY

Joeley is due next Thursday, though being a first timer I'm not expecting it to come on time!  She looks to have a good sized cria on board.

Big improver in the halter class today was Koko, he's a lovely boy and very affectionate.  Here he is sporting his new halter and lead - very dashing.

Also in class today, our star pupil, Bentley :)
